K-4th GRADE MICRONAUT MISSIONS
A Challenger Learning Center Micronaut mission experience is an exploration in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for your students. It is an interdisciplinary experperience designed specifically for K - 2nd grade classes exploring sciences and 3rd - 4th grade classes completing a Solar System unit. Micronaut missions costs $500 (September - May) and accommodate 6 - 48 students. Scholarships are available. Micronaut missions run twice each day: 9:00 -11:30 am and 11:30 am - 2:00 pm, Monday through Friday (except holidays). Schools should plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of their mission. NO PLACE LIKE EARTH (K - 2nd) or NEW HORIZONS: LOST SATELLITE (3rd - 4th) mission consists of three 40 minute components:
- Activity 1: Athena Simulated Space Mission
Students take a ride in the CLC Athena spacecraft in a daring attempt to find the best home planet for humans (K-2nd) or track a lost satellite through the Solar System (3rd-4th).
- Activity 2: Discovery Lab
Students work in pairs as they rotate through several science stations in the CLC Discovery Lab. Science station topics and activities vary by grade, but are all directly related to the Illinois Learning Standards.
- Activity 3: Engineering Venue Activity
Students are challenged to solve a problem posed to them by a CLC instructor. They will have to design, build and test a prototype for the solution, taking into consideration time, materials, and technology restrictions.
